The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens

The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens

Monteverde Lodge and Gardens Entrance

Last July before the kids started school in Costa Rica we took a little road trip inland to Monteverde and stayed at the Monteverde Lodge and Gardens. When traveling with kids I always look for kid friendly hotels but still offer a nice atmosphere for the adults. I like to find a balance and I choose to stay places that offer something unique, have a special design or are very traditional or typical of the city or town we are staying in.

The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens is what some might call rustic elegance or a charming retreat in the cloud forest, and I would have to agree! It’s literally like staying in a green house and is the perfect hotel for families visiting Monteverde. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly staff  that told us about all the daily activities that we could make reservations for right at the front desk.  They also have a restaurant and bar that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also has complimentary umbrellas, rain coats and rain boots for both children and adults, in case you get caught in the rain or  you forgot to pack your rain gear.

Packing Note: You should pack a pair of tennis shoes or hiking shoes, a pair of jeans and a light jacket as it can get chilly in the cloud forest.

Monteverde Lodge and Gardens Room

Our  room was very classy and cozy and decorated perfectly. There was a guide book of the area in the rooms which talked about the local area, the history of the hotel and how to be a respectful guest.  Our room had a small patio that was right at the edge of the cloud forest, it was the perfect place to sit and listen to the rain come down each afternoon.  An unexpected special treat, was the complimentary coffee bar with small pastries and cookies the hotel put out every afternoon.  Coming back to the hotel every afternoon was like settling into to your own home away from home, it was so comfortable and inviting. The entire staff was beyond accommodating, after dinner one night they even delivered a glass of wine to my room.

The restaurant serves some great food and even though they did not have an official kids menu they were willing to make just about anything our kids wanted.  They also remembered our kids names and every time we sat down to eat. The entire staff was so accomodating, after dinner one night they even delivered a glass of wine to my room.  Definitely some of the best service best we’ve ever had while traveling in Costa Rica.

What makes this hotel so special is the beautiful gardens you can escape to for a little while. There are plenty of benches along the way for sitting, a fish pond and walking paths that connect up with other Monteverde hiking trails. We wandered around the gardens every day.  Our kids loved exploring  and running through the gardens, and it was even more fun when it was raining on them.  I love it when  our kids can have fun and experience enjoy just their natural surroundings.   There was  definitely something enchanting and magical about these gardens.

Monteverde Lodge and Gardens Hot Tub Room

The hot tub room was no doubt one of my favorite spots in this hotel.  This was how we ended every night while staying at the Monteverde Lodge and Gardens. The glass windows were covered with greenery all around them and listening to the rain hit the roof made it even more relaxing.

There is also a media room with computers, books to rent and games to play.

We loved staying at the Monteverde Lodge and Gardens, it’s a true gem in the cloud forest!  I would highly recommend this to hotel to anyone visiting Monteverde.  Whether you are traveling with kids or looking for a romantic getaway this hotel is sure to please everyone.

Disclosure:  I was comped a two night stay including breakfast for editorial and review purposes.  We loved staying her so much that we decided to stay an additional night.

  • […] The Monteverde Lodge and Gardens is what I’d think staying in a little luxury bird house would be like. The rooms are very well decorated and and most have a beautiful porch area for sitting right up against the tropical grounds and listening to the sounds of chirping birds, the rushing river near in the distance and if you’re lucky, the rainfall. This hotel has an excellent restaurant and a beautiful bar area, which serves coffee and light refreshments in the afternoon. There is a large jacuzzi room that is filled with large window panels just like a greenhouse and the garden out back leads you to several walking and hiking paths! […]
